When BitePal fits

BitePal describes itself as a gamified food tracking app with an AI scanner: a photo of your meal returns calories and a nutrition score, plus water and fasting tracking and simple weekly meal plans. A raccoon companion reacts to your food choices. That appeals mainly to people who want to log without much typing and are motivated by game elements.

When Yazio fits

Yazio comes from Erfurt, Germany. According to the Yazio help centre, all calorie-counting functions will always be free. AI photo recognition was initially free for everyone and is now part of Yazio Pro. Yazio is strong on intermittent fasting, with many fasting plans.

How accurate are photo scanners?

Both apps estimate calories from photos. Yazio itself states that AI recognition only provides a rough estimate and cannot guarantee 100 % accurate results. A systematic review of AI-based image analysis found relative calorie errors between 0.10 % and 38.3 %, with lower errors for single, simple foods (Shonkoff et al., 2023). For precise values, it pays to correct portions where needed.

And if training is part of the picture?

BitePal and Yazio are nutrition apps. If you also want to track sets and weights, you usually need a second app. GymLog AI combines both: training, meals and an AI coach in one chat, by text, voice or photo, with a permanently free tier and data on EU servers.
