    Quick answer

When you scan food, AI detects the individual ingredients in a photo, estimates their amounts in grams and adds up calories and macros. Unlike a barcode scan, this also works for meals without packaging.

    Barcode scan or photo scan?

A barcode scan reads the nutrition of a packaged product from a database. Home-cooked or freshly prepared meals have no barcode – that is where a photo scan helps: AI breaks the dish down into ingredients and estimates their amounts.

    What the scan shows

Besides total calories, the scanner shows protein, carbs and fat in grams and their share of calories. Detected ingredients are listed with grams and calories so you can see how the result was calculated.

One scan per meal is faster than logging every ingredient by hand. What matters most is tracking consistently – an estimate tells you more than no entry at all.
